Matt Haley 11th September 2023

As a child I grew up with Runrig - my parents were big fans and it was Runrig rather than Pink Floyd or U2 who played in many a car journey. At this time we had every Donnie album and In Search Of Angels with Bruce, soon followed by The Stamping Ground and Proterra. By 2003 and the 30th Anniversary I was firmly a fan in my own right - with Donnie and Bruce equal in my mind. Both great, both different. Things changed when I finally saw Runrig live myself. First in 2012, then 2014, 2016 and finally at The Last Dance in 2018. I love Donnie but with these experiences Bruce became my true Runrig frontman. The setlist at Sheffield in 2016 contained probably seven of my ten favourite songs by the band. The Last Dance was deeply emotional at the time. At 24, Runrig had been synonymous with my life and here I was there for the end - but holding out hope it wasn't QUITE the end. I always wondered about 2023, the 50th year for the band. This news instead is shocking and heartbreaking in equal measure. The Last Dance will now hold a different significance knowing more about Bruce's situation. I could go on for much longer but to finish with something that resonates with me, and I know it did with Bruce too: "But you came to me like the ways of children, simple as breathing, easy as air". At a young age Bruce resonated with me, as an adult he represents some incredible and emotional memories. All the best to the family, Bruce will be truly missed. He was and is truly loved. RIP Bruce Guthro, thank you for the music.
