So many memories

Created by Isabelle one year ago

In 1994 I was at a friend's place and he had music playing on his HiFi that immediately caught my attention. He told me that the band is called Runrig and if I like, he could lend me the CDs, so I could listen to their music at home.

At home I put the 'Amazing Things' CD in my CD player, sat down and listened. Every song was so powerful and emotional. And then came track 10: Canada. That intro! I was totally blown away by this song and had to replay it several times before continuing on to the next song on the CD.

I listened to the other Runrig CDs and knew I had found 'my band'.

'Canada' is still my favourite Runrig song and it has so many meanings to me.

The first time I went to see Runrig live was in 1995 in Germany at an open air concert. It was the middle of summer, a really hot day.

However, as soon as Runrig came on stage, it started to rain. It was quite a downpour and sadly my friends, who I had come with, wanted to leave after just a few songs. As I had no way to get back home I had to leave as well but I swore to myself that from now on I will drive myself to any future Runrig concert and stay, no matter the weather.

In 1997 I went to Stirling to Donnie's farewell concert. I couldn't believe it that the band I only knew a few years was stopping.

In 1998 I moved to Scotland and how big was my joy when the news broke that Bruce was to become Runrig's new lead singer. And, of course, he was from Canada!

I went to see Bruce with Runrig for the first time in Stirling in December 1998. He won me over immediately!

My friend Kirstin and I went to as many concerts in the following years as possible. We made so many great friends along the way.

In 2000 we went to Canada to see Bruce performing with his band. We went to places I had never heard of before, i.e. Brampton. On this tour we made such great friends (the guthrofans) and I will always remember this very special week in freezing cold Canada (it was February) and our visit to the frozen Niagara falls.

After each concert Bruce came to meet all his fans and he was so down to earth and easy to talk to. After one of these concerts the Guthrofans group presented him with his own star in the sky.

Over the years I have seen Runrig 54 times, 48 times with Bruce. When it all ended in 2018 I was heartbroken but at the same time grateful that the band gave us so much over all these years.

In 2019 I moved back to Germany and at the end of the year I went to Bruce's Celtic X-Mas in Frankfurt. It was such an incredible wonderful evening. Jodi and Dylon were there as well and it was a perfect evening. Never would I have tought that this was the last time I saw Bruce live.

Thank you Bruce for all that you gave us, your music, your wonderful personality, the friendships, the memories.

We will remember!

Rest in Peace.
