From the first time i heard Runrig’s music, on a coach to Paris in 1991, to finding out my (now wife) girlfriend had records of the band too, to the first live performance we saw, to the departing of the previous fromt man, the wonder, concern and fear for the band’s future… then came the name Bruce Guthro. We’d heard the voice before somewhere - Fiddle And Bow with Nat! That was it!! The rest, since 1998 and when he samd the opening lines in Manchester “When i arrived from Canada”… to the Hogmanay concert in Inverness with a very young Dylan on stage with his Dad, to the launch of the Stamping Ground in Portree where we were introduced to now lifelong friends from a new Canadian friend who had come over to see the band, to Brian’s “deer in the headlights look on stage and signing his full name as an autograph back stage that night, to numerous meet ups with friemds who we have met through the music - now both sides of the pond. A tour across 7 countries including the Nolia Theatre, New York - the memorable dedication of Book of Golden Stories att Blackburn to a recently departed Riggie friend, the discpvery of The Outer Hebrides, which i now call home, the regular comtact with fellow fans who are now very special friends, introducing other, non musical friends and family to their music and seeing their reaction as, like our first concert - as if being hit by a train!
An appearance on stage by yours truly with Bruce during May Morning in York was a definite highlight after being dragged up by Bruce and pushed by my wife and brother! Playing a pro-celeb golf tournament around Stanfest in Nova Scotia, conversations about photography i had done of the band “let’s walk and talk, i’m cold” as Bruce arrived at the venue in Wolvehampton in the middle of winter.
The energy, professionalism and yet a sense of mischief, fun and reality were ever present throughout Bruce’s time woth tje bhoys.
And that final concert… WOW!
so much to say thank you for, and so many memories ive missed out.
Thank You.
RIP Bruce
